Tackling Poverty

The debilitating poverty in which the women live is also a major priority for change by CWCG. Basic food security for households as well as clean water (which must be paid for in Lusaka) are real life and death issues for many of the women who join our group.

Income Generating Skills

Training for simple income generating activities has been another real success for CWCG. Skills training includes:

  • Making of tie and dye material - the most popular skill training
  • Crocheting - many different items are made everything from hats to ponchos
  • Sewing - regular sewing classes take place and more machines are always needed
  • Rug making - simple door mats are the most popular especially during the rainy season
  • Flower arranging - some of the women now have regular employment in this activity
  • Chikanda making - chikanda is a type of cake which is very popular in Zambia. The cake is sold in markets and from homes.
